Bishops Talk Tabernacles

Comments from various U.S. bishops
U.S. bishops speak out against the fad of removing the tabernacle from the main body of the church.

At the November, 1999 general meeting of the U.S. National Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C., Archbishop Jerome Hanus presented the long-awaited document on church architecture. More than thirty bishops rose to speak on 'Domus Dei' (later renamed 'Built of Living Stones'), the 100-page text that will eventually replace the highly controversial 'Environment & Art in Catholic Worship.' Not one of these bishops defended the fad of removing the tabernacle from the sanctuary of our churches. The following is a transcript, prepared by Michael S. Rose, of comments from bishops who addressed this sensitive issue:

Bernard F. Cardinal Law
Archbishop of Boston, Mass.
